Tax residency in Belize
How to become a tax resident — and how hard it is to leave.
How to become a tax resident
Typically after 183+ days of presence in a year — or any of:
- 183+ days in Belize in a basis year
- domiciled in Belize
A self-funded foreigner typically enters on a visitor visa, remains legally in Belize for at least one year (without leaving more than 14 days total) and then applies for permanent residence, or uses Temporary Residence if making a substantial investment of at least BZ$500,000.
How to break residency
moderate to leaveBelize’s official rule is straightforward: tax residency turns on physical presence over 182 days or Belize domicile. Leaving is not especially hard, but domicile can keep someone resident even after departure, so a clean break is easier if domicile is also severed.
“the person spent in the aggregate more than one hundred and eighty-two (182) days within Belize in that basis year or if the person was domiciled in Belize.” — OECD summary of Belize tax authority guidance
