How to become a tax resident — and how hard it is to leave.

How to become a tax resident

hard to get residency

There is no official residence-by-investment or digital-nomad visa; most non-EU foreigners need a French long-stay visa plus work authorization for stays beyond the 90-day visa-free period, while EU nationals can settle if they have independent means and are self-employed.

How to break residency

moderate to leave
Domicile / deemed-domicile applies

Official guidance indicates residency turns on domicile/residence facts rather than citizenship, so leaving is possible by ending those ties. It is not purely day-count based, so breaking residency is harder than simply moving away, but there is no indication of a lingering citizenship rule or departure tax.
